From the Easel of Ralph White…

No rest for the weary. We’ve heard this saying countless times. Perhaps it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Every day, there is something in print and online regarding stress that manifests out of our hectic lifestyles. We are wired and wireless because we must be connected and “on” at all times. Devices and gadgets help us attempt to keep up with all that we try to cram into every moment. When did we get so busy that we started talking on cell phones and sending text messages at the most inopportune times because we needed to multi-task at the risk of our own safety? Willingly stepping up on the treadmills of life, we cranked the dial up so high that the only way to get off is to get thrown off. Even then, we don’t interpret this as an opportunity to rest. Instead, we jump right back on another treadmill.

The message of this work (Cloudline, 2006) is the natural gift of downtime. Using a subdued color palette, I imbued the painting with a palpable sense of time stopping - of the complete necessity of being still. The clouds have settled in for the night, nestled below the tops of the trees, like a soft comforter lain over the landscape. The far off trees joyfully accept their covering of clouds, knowing that when morning comes, they will once again be bathed in sunlight. Where do you find complete rest? Do you take time to tune in to your innermost soul? Do you have a place you can go where you can release all your life’s details and immerse yourself in comfort? Surely if nature can take its cue from the last bit of dusk before nightfall, we must take the time to restore our energy. Start today. Simply set aside 10 minutes to find your personal Cloudline.
